H I S T O R Y

Herberts Cukurs (1900-1965) was a Latvian aviator and deputy commander of the so-called Arajs Kommando, the Latvian Auxiliary Police unit founded by Viktors Arājs, which carried out the worst mass murders of Latvian Jews in the Holocaust of World War II. Long-time member of our editorial staff Juris Šlesers reports on new insights about the extent of Cukurs’ complicity given in a recently published book by Linda Kinstler, Come to This Court & Cry. How the Holocaust Ends.
 

V I S U A L  A R T

Agnija Lesničenoka, archival expert at the State Archives of Latvia and a doctoral candidate at the Art Academy of Latvia writes about painter Pauls Puzinas (1907-1967), “...with Lithuanian roots but Latvian at heart”.

Artist, educator, head of the American Latvian Artists Association and JG art editor Linda Treija of Houston TX, writes about the recent work of contemporary artist Rita Grendze, whose home is in Aurora IL, near Chicago.

Treija together with Aija Moeller, a nonprofit organization manager in Washington, DC and an artist in her own right, offer a “Collage of Impressions” of a production of a play, Anšlavs un Veronika, by Raimonds Staprāns of San Francisco, at the XV Latvian Song and Dance Festival in St. Paul MN last summer.

All visual art is illustrated throughout the magazine. The cover art for this issue is by Rita Grendze.

Valters Nollendorfs pays homage to poet Knuts Skujenieks (1936-2022); Gaida Jablovska and Sandra Ratniece pay homage to poet Lija Brīdaka (1932-2022).

Valters Nollendorfs shares his poem “Speaks the Fallen Ukrainian Soldier”:

this is my soil my grain and my bread this is my land my people and my state I am Rus the Viking Ukraine’s seed and root no Muscovite weed will suppress nor eradicate me I am the soil of my land I am its grain and its bread forever.
